The Killing Fields
For far too long the government of Sudan has used its own troops as well as armed militias to kill and enslave the people of southern Sudan. While it has promised over and over again to make peace, it actually continues to make war. Its main victims have been Christians, as well as Muslim sects that reject the government's extremist practices. All told, thousands have been killed and thousands more displaced. Due to a determined grassroots effort led by evangelical Christians, the Congress and the President have focused attention on Sudan. Yet, every time the government promises peace, it or its allied militias
make war. Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS) has introduced a resolution (S. Con. Res.
124) recognizing the situation in Sudan as "genocide" and calling on the
international community to take action in accordance with its obligations under
the Genocide Convention. We can only hope action will be taken before the
southern Sudanese are eliminated from the face of the earth.
