Where is the El Obeid diocese located?

The El Obeid diocese is the only Catholic diocese in the world that is in two countries. Originally the diocese was entirely within the country of Sudan but following the creation on July 9, 2011, of South Sudan—composed of what was the southern portion of Sudan – the diocese now operates in both countries.

This unique two-country status may create some confusion when we refer to “southern Sudan,” “South Sudan,” and sometimes simply “Sudan”—as in the Fund’s name.

The diocese encompasses an area torn by decades of conflict including Darfur, South Kordofan (where the Nuba Mountains are located), and other provinces in Sudan; the region of Abyaiae whose country status is still to be decided; and northern provinces in South Sudan.

The Bishop Gassis Sudan Relief Fund supports vital relief efforts, healthcare, schooling, freshwater projects, and other assistance to the people of the region regardless of nationality, religion, ethnicity, or tribal affiliation. The Fund also supports critical projects beyond the borders of the diocese.
